The word Gematria itself is derived from two Greek words: 'ge' which means "earth" and 'mathein' which means "to learn". In effect, Gematria n can be seen as a way for adherents to unlock spiritual wisdom found within certain biblical texts.
Historically, different systems of Gematria have been used across Jewish communities in various parts of the world since antiquity. While the symbolism attached to each letter has varied slightly depending on its origin, the basic principles remain largely unchanged - with each letter having a numerical value representing its equivalent rank in an ancient Hebrew alphabet.
The most popularly used set of values were standardized by Rabbi Judah Ibn Shushan during around the 8th century CE according to traditional Hebrew Monotheism and specific Christian beliefs, they were further developed by legendary mathematician Levi Ben Gershon or Gersonides by around late 13th century CE.
Gematria is used to examine various aspects of texts, such as correspondences between words and phrases with similar numerical values; characteristics associated with certain numbers; patterns or archetypes particularly associated with certain letters; and more. Exploring meanings based on numerical value can help uncover hidden layers of meaning within written texts as well as provide guidance in meditations and prayer. Additionally, there are some who consider that certain numbers possess prophetic properties and can be used to make predictions about potential future events.
